How many bras do you need, and when to replace them
Five to seven bras, rotated, last far longer. What a practical bra wardrobe looks like, the signs a bra is finished, and how to make them last.

Most of us own more bras than we wear, and wear the same two or three until they give up. Knowing how many you actually need, and when a bra is finished, saves money and makes every day more comfortable.
The short version: most women need about five to seven bras: three to four everyday bras in rotation, one or two for fitted or special outfits, and one for exercise. Replace a bra when the band rides up on the tightest hook, the straps won't stay up, or the fabric has thinned, usually after six months to a year of regular wear.
Why rotation matters
The elastic in a bra needs time to recover after a day of wear. Wearing the same bra two days running stretches it before it has bounced back, and it loosens much faster. Rotating three or four everyday bras lets each one rest, so all of them last longer.
In Indian summers, you will often want a fresh bra every day anyway: sweat breaks down stretch fibres faster than washing does.
A practical bra wardrobe
| Type | How many | What for |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday cotton bras | 3–4 | Office, college, home, under kurtis |
| Full coverage lightly padded (seamless) | 1–2 | Fitted tops, T-shirts, white or light kurtis |
| Sports bra | 1–2 | Walks, yoga, housework, long days |
| Special-outfit bra | 1 | Deep-back blouses, lehengas, occasion wear |
That is roughly five to seven in total. If you wear a sports bra most days at home, count it as an everyday bra and keep three of those instead.
For a teenager's first bras: three or four starter bras, so one is always clean on a school morning. See the first bra guide.
When to replace a bra
A bra is finished when any of these is true:
- The band rides up at the back even on the tightest hook. The band gives most of the support; once it has stretched, the bra cannot do its job.
- The straps keep slipping, however much you tighten them.
- The cups have lost their shape: padding is creased or dented, or a non-padded cup has gone baggy.
- The fabric has thinned or bobbled, or the elastic edges feel crunchy or wavy.
- It no longer fits because your body has changed. Weight changes, pregnancy and age all change bra size.
With three or four in rotation and gentle washing, a good everyday bra usually lasts six months to a year. Sports bras worn for daily exercise may need replacing sooner.
Make them last longer
- Rotate. Never wear the same bra two days running.
- Hand wash or use a laundry bag on a gentle cycle in cool water.
- Fasten the hooks before washing so they don't snag other clothes.
- Never wring or twist, especially padded cups.
- Dry in the shade, flat or hung by the band, never in the dryer.
- Store cups nested, not folded in half.

Check your size when you replace
Most people buy the same size for years. When you replace a set, measure again: snugly round the ribcage under the bust for the band, and round the fullest part for the bust. Two minutes with a tape can change which size you should buy. Use the bra size chart or look up your bust on the bust size chart.
Building your set on a budget
Packs bring the price down. Three cotton sports bras or three starter bras are ₹899 together, and full coverage cotton bras come in packs of two to five. See everything at bras under ₹500.
Frequently asked questions
How many bras should a woman own?
About five to seven: three or four everyday bras to rotate, one or two for fitted or special outfits, and one or two for exercise.
How often should you replace bras?
Usually every six months to a year with regular wear. Replace sooner if the band rides up on the tightest hook, the straps slip or the fabric thins.
How many days can I wear the same bra?
Ideally one day, then let it rest for a day or two so the elastic recovers. In hot weather, wash after every wear.
How do I know if my bra is worn out?
The band rides up even on the tightest hook, the straps won't stay up, or the cups and fabric have lost their shape.
How many bras does a teenager need?
Three or four starter bras, so one is always clean and dry for school.
