Measuring tape around the underbust to find band size on a bra size chart

Bra sizes look confusing until you see that they are just two numbers: the band (the number, like 34) and the cup (the letter, like B). This page puts every chart you need in one place: band, cup, sister sizes, UK and US conversions, and how a band-and-cup size maps to S, M, L, XL and XXL.

The short version: measure under your bust for the band, measure across the fullest part for the bust, and the difference between the two gives the cup. Not sure? Measure once (here's how, step by step) and use the charts below.

Bra band size chart (underbust)

Measure snugly around your ribcage, directly under your bust, with the tape level. Round to the nearest even number.

Bra cup size chart (bust minus band)

Now measure around the fullest part of your bust without pulling the tape tight. Subtract your band size. Each inch of difference is one cup.

Bust minus band	Cup

2 inches	B
3 inches	C

5 inches	DD
6 inches	E

Example: underbust 33 inches gives band 34. Bust 37 inches. 37 − 34 = 3 inches, so your size is 34C.

S, M, L, XL: how bra sizes convert to letter sizes

Many everyday bras, sports bras and starter bras in India, including all of ours, come in S to XXL instead of band and cup. Stretch cotton-lycra fabric covers a range of cups, so the band is what decides the size.

XL	36	34–36	38–40
XXL	38	36–38	40–42

So a 34B or a 34C usually wears an L. If you are a 32DD or above, try one size up for more room in the cup.

Sister sizes: when your size is sold out

A sister size has the same cup volume on a different band. Go down a band, up a cup or up a band, down a cup:

34B → 32C or 36A
34C → 32D or 36B
36C → 34D or 38B

Use a sister size when the band feels too loose or too tight but the cup fits well.

Indian vs UK vs US bra sizes

Indian bra sizes follow the UK system. The band numbers are the same everywhere. Only the cup letters change, and only above D.

DD	DD	DD or E
E	E	DDD or F

So a 34DD from an Indian or UK brand is a 34DD or 34E on a US site.

Five signs your bra is the wrong size

The band rides up at the back. The band is too loose. Go down a band size.
Straps dig in or leave red marks. The band is not doing its job, so the straps carry the weight (more in Bra straps digging in?).
The cup gapes or wrinkles. The cup is too big, or the style does not suit your shape.
Spilling over the top or sides. The cup is too small. Go up a cup or a size.
You need to keep adjusting it. Something is off, usually the band.
