What colour leggings to wear with every kurti

The right leggings can make a plain kurti look finished, and the wrong colour can make a good kurti look off. You don't need a dozen pairs. With a few colour rules and four or five shades, you can match almost every kurti in your wardrobe.

The short version: match the leggings to a colour inside the kurti's print, or pick a neutral (black, white, beige, navy, grey). For festive kurtis, a shimmer legging in a matching or neutral shade adds a little shine without clashing.

Three simple colour rules

1. Pick up a colour from the print. If your kurti has a teal border or small teal flowers, teal leggings tie the look together.
2. Plain kurti? Contrast it. A solid mustard kurti looks brighter with navy or white leggings than with mustard.
3. When unsure, go neutral. Black, white, beige, navy and grey go with almost everything.

• Beige shimmer: under pastel and gold-work kurtis; it reads almost like a metallic nude
• Baby pink shimmer: under white, grey and light blue festive kurtis
• Teal blue shimmer: under mustard, cream and peach
• White shimmer: under dark festive kurtis for contrast

Tip: keep the kurti's embroidery and the leggings' shimmer on the same side, gold with warm shades (beige, brown) and silver with cool shades (grey, navy, white).

Length and fit with a kurti

• Ankle length is the most versatile under knee-length and calf-length kurtis.
• With a short kurti, make sure the leggings aren't sheer when you bend. Our cotton lycra is opaque.
• Leggings should sit smooth, without wrinkles at the ankle. Too many wrinkles usually means they're a size too big (check the size guide).
