What to wear under a kurti, saree and fitted tops
The right innerwear disappears. A practical guide to layering under kurtis, sarees, sheer fabrics and close-fitting knits.

Good innerwear is invisible. It is not supposed to be noticed, admired or adjusted — it is supposed to do its job and disappear.
Here is what actually works under the things most of us wear.
Under a kurti
A camisole is doing more work than people give it credit for. It smooths the line, adds opacity to lighter cottons, and stops a fitted kurti clinging where you would rather it did not.
Look for adjustable straps so the neckline sits where you need it, and stretch fabric that moves rather than bunching at the waist when you sit.
For a fitted kurti, a lightly padded, seam-free cup keeps the line smooth. A seamed cup will print through thin cotton in strong light, however good the bra.
Under a saree
The blouse does the shaping, so the bra needs to sit inside its lines — no straps, no band edges, no back closure visible above the blouse.
- Deep-back blouse: a low-back or convertible bra
- Sleeveless blouse: no side spillage; a full-coverage cup that sits flush
- Sheer saree: a matched, seamless brief underneath
Match the bra to your skin tone rather than the blouse. Skin tone disappears under nearly everything; white does not, especially under light colours.
Under fitted knits and t-shirts
This is what a t-shirt bra exists for. The moulded cup has no seams and no stitching lines, so nothing prints through even in thin jersey.
Pair it with a seamless brief — bonded edges rather than stitched — and the whole outfit sits flat.
Under white and pale colours
The instinct is to wear white. White is the most visible thing you can wear under white.
Choose beige or a shade close to your own skin tone. It vanishes; white glows through.
Under activewear
Support scales with impact. Walking and yoga need light support; running and HIIT need a proper high-impact sports bra with a firm band.
Cotton-blend fabrics are more comfortable in Indian heat than full synthetics, and they smell better after a session.
The mistakes worth avoiding
- Tightening straps to fix a loose band. The band gives the support; tight straps just hurt your shoulders.
- Wearing white under white. Skin tone every time.
- Ignoring the fabric. A perfect fit in the wrong fabric is still uncomfortable in May.
- Keeping a bra past its life. Once the band has gone slack on the tightest hook, it is done.
