How to choose a camisole: fabric, straps, fit and colour
A cotton camisole is the most useful layer under kurtis, shirts and sheer tops. How to choose the fabric, fit and colour, and which colours do which job.

A camisole is the layer most women reach for without thinking about it: under a sheer kurti, a loose shirt, a deep neckline, or on its own at home. Getting the fabric, fit and colour right is what makes it disappear under clothes instead of showing through.
The short version: choose breathable cotton for everyday wear, adjustable straps so it sits where your outfit needs it, your usual top size for a smooth fit, and the colour by job: beige under white and sheer, black under dark, and colours for wearing on show.
Why wear a camisole at all
- Under sheer or thin kurtis and shirts, so the bra outline and skin don't show through.
- Under deep or wide necklines, for a little extra cover.
- As a sweat layer between skin and a kurti or blouse you don't want to wash after every wear.
- On its own at home, as a light top on hot days.

Fabric: cotton for Indian weather
Cotton breathes and absorbs sweat, which is what you want in a layer worn all day under other clothes. A little stretch in the fabric lets it sit close without clinging or riding up. All So Glamy camisoles are soft cotton with stretch.
Avoid shiny synthetic camisoles for daily wear in summer: they trap heat and can show static cling under thin fabrics.
Straps: why adjustable matters
Adjustable straps let you set the neckline height. Shorten them to bring the neckline up under a deep-cut top; lengthen them to sit lower under a boat neck. Fixed straps only fit one way. Our camisoles all have adjustable straps.
Which colour for which job
| Colour | Best for |
|---|---|
| Beige | Under white, cream and sheer fabrics. Closest to skin tone, so it shows least. |
| White | Under white cotton that isn't see-through, and on its own at home. |
| Black | Under black and dark kurtis and tops. |
| Grey, navy blue | Under mid-tone and dark prints; easy everyday colours. |
| Baby pink, pistachio green | Worn as a visible layer under open shirts or jackets, or at home. |
The one rule people get wrong: under a white or sheer top, beige shows less than white. A white camisole under white fabric creates a visible block of brighter white.
How it should fit
- Close but not tight: it should follow your shape without squeezing. If it rolls up at the hem, it's too small.
- Long enough to tuck or sit below the waist so it doesn't ride up when you raise your arms.
- Straps flat on the shoulders, not twisting or digging.
Sizes
Camisoles are sized by bust and waist:
| Size | Bust (in) | Waist (in) | Bust (cm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| S | 32–34 | 26–28 | 81–86 |
| M | 34–36 | 28–30 | 86–91 |
| L | 36–38 | 30–32 | 91–97 |
| XL | 38–40 | 32–34 | 97–102 |
| XXL | 40–42 | 34–36 | 102–107 |
Between sizes? Take the larger for a relaxed layer, the smaller if you want it to sit flat under fitted tops. Full charts are in the size guide.
Care
Wash cold, inside out, with similar colours, and dry in the shade so whites stay white and colours don't fade. More in how to wash innerwear.
