What to wear under a lehenga: bra, shorts and layers for a long festive day
A lehenga is heavy, long and worn for hours. The bra, shorts and layers that keep it comfortable from the first photo to the last dance.

A lehenga is the most demanding outfit most of us wear all year. The skirt is heavy, the blouse is fitted, and the day is long: getting ready, the function, the photos, the dinner, the dancing. What you wear underneath decides whether you are still comfortable at hour eight.
The short version: a seamless or blouse-matched bra, a pair of cotton lycra undershorts under the skirt, and a camisole only if the blouse or dupatta is sheer.
The bra: let the blouse decide
Look at the back and the neckline of the blouse first, then choose the bra.
- Regular back, fitted blouse: a seamless, lightly padded full-coverage bra. It sits inside the blouse lines and nothing prints through embroidered or silk fabric.
- Deep U or V back: a bra with a low U-shape back, so the band stays below the blouse opening. Our guide to bras for deep-back and backless blouses covers each cut.
- Sleeveless or off-shoulder: full-coverage cups that sit flush at the sides, so there is no side spillage when you raise your arms for photos.
Many lehenga blouses have cups stitched in. If yours does, try it on with and without a bra: often a thin, non-padded bra underneath is enough, and it stops the blouse from rubbing.

Under the skirt: undershorts, not just a brief
This is the piece people forget. A lehenga skirt is heavy and full, and with a can-can or net lining underneath, your inner thighs rub together all evening, especially when you dance or sit cross-legged.
A pair of short-length cotton lycra undershorts fixes that. They stop the chafing, add cover if the skirt has a slit or a sheer layer, and keep you comfortable on stage steps and in the car. Choose a mid-waist pair so the waistband sits below the lehenga's drawstring rather than on top of it.

If you prefer a brief, choose a full-coverage one in a stretchy fabric. A heavy skirt pulls on the waistband all day, and a tight, narrow brief will dig in by evening.
When to add a camisole
Most lehenga blouses are lined and need nothing more. Add a skin-tone camisole when:
- the blouse is sheer, net or has cut-work panels,
- you are wearing a jacket-style or long-line blouse that opens at the front, or
- you want a layer between embroidery and your skin; heavy zari can scratch over a long day.
A camisole with adjustable straps lets you set the neckline to sit below the blouse's. For more on layering, see camisole vs slip vs bra.

Colour: skin tone, not the lehenga
Match the bra and camisole to your skin tone rather than to the outfit. A red bra under a red blouse still shows as a different red in flash photos; beige or a close skin tone disappears. Keep black for dark blouses only.
For the long day itself
- Try the full outfit on once, including the innerwear, a few days before. Sit, raise your arms, and walk on stairs.
- Pack a spare brief and a few safety pins in your clutch.
- Change into something soft afterwards. After eight hours in a lehenga, a cotton night suit feels like a reward.

Frequently asked questions
What should I wear under a lehenga skirt?
Short-length undershorts in a stretchy cotton blend. They stop your thighs chafing under a heavy skirt and can-can, and add cover if the skirt has a slit or sheer layer.
Do I need a bra if my lehenga blouse has padding?
Not always. Try the blouse on without one first. If the padding sits right and nothing shows, you can skip it; if the blouse rubs or the fit feels loose, a thin non-padded bra underneath helps.
Which bra is best under a deep-back lehenga blouse?
One with a low U-shape back, so the band stays below the blouse opening. Check it in a mirror with your arms raised.
What colour innerwear should I wear under a lehenga?
Skin tone or beige, whatever the colour of the lehenga. It disappears under fabric and in flash photos; a colour-matched bra often does not.
