Leggings size guide: how to pick the right size and length
Leggings are sized by waist and hips, and length matters as much as width. A size chart in inches and cm, how to measure, and what to do between sizes.

Leggings should feel like a second skin: no sagging at the knees, no waistband rolling down, no fabric bunching at the ankle. Most of that comes down to picking the right size.
The short version: measure your waist and hips, and choose the size that fits your hips. Leggings stretch, so between sizes go down for a firmer fit or up for a relaxed one. Check the inseam if you're petite or tall.
Leggings size chart
| Size | Waist (in) | Hips (in) | Waist (cm) | Hips (cm) | Inseam (in) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| S | 26–28 | 34–36 | 66–71 | 86–91 | 27 |
| M | 28–30 | 36–38 | 71–76 | 91–97 | 27.5 |
| L | 30–32 | 38–40 | 76–81 | 97–102 | 28 |
| XL | 32–34 | 40–42 | 81–86 | 102–107 | 28.5 |
| XXL | 34–36 | 42–44 | 86–91 | 107–112 | 29 |
These are body measurements. The garment is cut smaller because the fabric stretches.
How to measure
- Waist: round your natural waist, the narrowest part above the belly button.
- Hips: round the fullest part of your hips and seat, feet together.
- Inseam (optional): from the crotch to the ankle bone, along the inside of your leg. Easiest with a pair of leggings that already fit.
Keep the tape level and snug, not tight.
Which measurement decides
The hips. The waistband is elastic and stretches to fit, but if the hips are too tight the fabric thins and can turn see-through when you bend. If your waist and hips point to different sizes, go by the hips.
Between two sizes?
- Size down for a firmer, sculpted fit, especially in stretchy cotton lycra.
- Size up if you prefer them relaxed, or if you'll wear them for long hours sitting.
Length: ankle length and your height
Ankle-length leggings end at or just above the ankle bone. As a rough guide:
- Under about 5'2": the extra length bunches at the ankle, which many people like. Check the inseam column.
- About 5'2" to 5'7": they sit at the ankle as intended.
- Taller: they end a little higher, at ankle-crop length.
Signs the size is wrong
- Waistband rolls down: too big at the waist, or too small at the hips pulling it down.
- See-through when you bend: too small. Go up a size.
- Saggy knees or seat: too big. Go down a size.
- Digging at the waist: too small. Go up.
