How to Wash and Care for Your Innerwear So It Lasts Longer

Innerwear is the hardest-working clothing you own. It is worn against the skin, all day, and washed more often than anything else in your wardrobe. Yet it is usually the first thing to lose its shape — not because of poor quality, but because of how it is washed and stored. A few small changes will noticeably extend the life of every bra, camisole and pair of panties you own.

Why care matters more than you think

Almost all modern innerwear contains elastane for stretch. Elastane is remarkably strong but has two enemies: heat and harsh detergent. Both break down the fibres, and once elastic has gone slack it cannot be restored. Most innerwear does not wear out — it gets cooked and stretched out.

Washing: the rules that actually matter

Use cool water

Cold or lukewarm water (below 30°C) cleans innerwear perfectly well and protects the elastic. Hot water is the single fastest way to ruin a good bra.

Hand wash where you can

Hand washing takes two minutes. Soak in cool water with a mild detergent, gently press the suds through the fabric, and rinse. Do not scrub or twist — friction is what causes pilling and breaks down the fibres around the seams.

If you use a machine

  • Always use a mesh laundry bag — it stops straps tangling and hooks catching on other clothes.
  • Fasten all hooks first, so they do not snag.
  • Use the delicate or hand-wash cycle at the lowest spin speed.
  • Wash innerwear separately from jeans, towels and anything with zips.

Choose a gentle detergent

Skip bleach and heavily perfumed detergents. Avoid fabric softener entirely on anything stretchy — it coats the fibres, reducing both breathability and stretch recovery. A mild liquid detergent is all you need.

Drying: where most damage happens

Never wring or twist innerwear. Press the water out gently between your palms, or roll the item in a towel and press.

Dry flat or line dry in shade. Direct Indian sunlight is intense enough to fade colours and degrade elastic within a few sessions. And avoid the tumble dryer on heat — for bras especially, it is the quickest route to misshapen cups.

When line drying bras, hang them from the centre gore (the bit between the cups) or lay them flat. Hanging by one strap stretches the elastic unevenly over time.

Storage: protect the shape

  • Never fold moulded cups inside out. It creases the foam permanently and the cup never sits properly again. Stack them nested, in the same direction.
  • Store non-padded bras, camisoles and panties folded flat in a drawer, not crammed in.
  • Keep the drawer dry. In humid months, a sachet of silica gel helps prevent musty smells and mildew.

Rotate your innerwear

This is the most underrated tip. Elastic needs time to recover after being worn. Wearing the same bra two days running stretches it out much faster than alternating between three or four. Ideally, give a bra a day of rest between wears — it will last significantly longer.

The same applies to nightwear: having a few sets in rotation means each one is washed less often and lasts longer.

Fabric-specific notes

  • Cotton — durable and washable, but can shrink in hot water. Cool wash, shade dry.
  • Cotton lycra blends — treat as delicate; the lycra is the vulnerable part, not the cotton.
  • Satin and silky nightwear — hand wash only, and never wring. Dry flat in shade.
  • Seamless and moulded styles — avoid high heat entirely; the bonding can separate.

When to replace innerwear

Even with perfect care, innerwear has a lifespan. Replace a bra when the band no longer feels firm on the loosest hook (you should start on the loosest and move tighter as it stretches), when underwires poke through, or when cups have lost their shape. As a rough guide, a regularly worn bra lasts six months to a year.

For panties and camisoles, replace them when the elastic slackens, the fabric thins, or they stop feeling comfortable. Worn-out innerwear affects how everything else sits.

A simple weekly routine

Set aside a few minutes on laundry day: hooks fastened, mesh bag, cool delicate cycle, gentle detergent, shade dry, fold flat. That is the whole system — and it is the difference between replacing your basics every few months and keeping them comfortable for years.

Dealing with odour and stains

Sweat and humidity are the two biggest challenges in Indian weather. A few practical points:

  • Wash innerwear after every wear in hot, humid months. Bacteria, not fabric, causes lingering odour.
  • For stubborn smells, soak for 20–30 minutes in cool water with a spoon of baking soda before washing as usual.
  • Never leave damp innerwear in a pile or a closed bag — that is how mildew and permanent odour set in.
  • Treat stains promptly with cool water. Hot water sets protein-based stains rather than removing them.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I wash my bra?

Every two to three wears in normal conditions, and after every wear in hot or humid weather, or after exercise. Washing too rarely allows oils and sweat to break down the elastic.

Can I put bras in the washing machine?

Yes, if you take precautions: fasten the hooks, use a mesh laundry bag, select the delicate cycle with cold water and the lowest spin. Hand washing is still gentler, especially for moulded or seamless styles.

Why do my bras lose shape so quickly?

Usually heat, or wearing the same bra on consecutive days. Hot water, sun drying and tumble drying all degrade elastane. Rotating between several bras makes the biggest difference.

How long should innerwear last?

A regularly worn bra lasts roughly six months to a year; panties and camisoles vary with wear and washing. Replace them when the elastic slackens or the fabric thins — comfort and shape go together.
